Week Ending 4th July
This week in Maths, Y3 have been continuing with the topic of shape. They have looked at parallel and perpendicular lines and also recognised/described 2D shapes. Y4 finished their shape topic by completing symmetric figures. They also began a statistics topic when interpreting various charts.
In English, we are focusing on grammar and punctuation. We identified and used main and subordinate clauses in sentences that we created. We also looked at apostrophes for contractions and did various activities to practise the two words being contracted into one.
In History, we focused on Victorian prisons as part of our crime and punishment topic. After learning about the various punishments in prison such as picking oakum or the treadwheel, the children became Victorian prisoners and re-created some of the punishments themselves! Then they wrote all about the events that took place and their feelings in a diary.
In Music, we looked at the texture and structure of a piece of music called 'Clapping Music' by Steve Reich. The children also expressed their likes/dislikes, expressing views and opinions. The children then composed and performed some basic body percussion rhythms, starting with ‘Boom, Snap, Clap’.
In PE, the children have been continuing lessons on tag rugby. The children have been developing and applying skills like running, catching, passing and tagging, while also learning to evade defenders and work within a team. Some children also attended a Tri-Golf event, developing their chipping and putting skills.
In Art, we have been continuing with sketching. This week, we have looked at different flowers and plants under a magnifying glass in great detail. We recapped our previous learning in Science to discuss the functions of each part of the plant. We then focused on the main shapes of the flowers to be able to sketch them and then used our shading skills to add tone.
Week Ending 27th June
Hedgehogs have worked extremely hard during their assessment week this week. They showed determination, maturity and resilience throughout all the little classroom tests. We are very proud of them!
In Maths, both year groups have been looking at the topic of shape. Y3s have focused on angles: identifying them, comparing them and looking specifically at right angles. Y4s have learnt about various types of different shapes, such as: triangles. quadrilaterals and polygons.
Following our poetry workshop with Word Guerilla, in English we have been looking at different 'power of positivity' poems. The children created their own positivity poems, practised and performed them to the rest of the class and Mr Draper.
In Computing, we began a mini project to use a simulated scenario to produce a news report. This week, we became news reporters and recorded notes about various messages and news stories from the simulated scenario to help us produce a news report in upcoming weeks.
This week in History, we looked at the Tudors for our crime and punishment topic. We analysed five different sources (Tudor objects) and created predictions based on what we think it was used for and what a person might have done to be given this punishment.
Week Ending 20th June
English📖 The Jabberwocky
Continuing our topic of poetry this week. We have been using our investigative skills to retrieve information from the text. We have also looked at how the words, rhyme and rhythm creates an effect the poet wants to convey. We also remembered a way of spelling the word rhythm.🎶
Maths🔢
Year 4 have finished their topic of time and have moved onto their new topic of shape, focussing on direction to begin with.
Year 3 are continuing their topic of time and have been focussing on seconds, minutes and hours.
Science🧑🏻🔬
We have finished our topic of sound and ended it with an investigation to find out how well sound can be heard from certain measured distances. We also completed an end of topic mini assessment and had an attempt at making our own guitars with tissue boxes and elastic bands.
PE 🏈
Continuing our rugby sessions with the coach from Wigan Warriors. We have been learning about styles of passing and how to score a try.
Computing💻
We started a unit this week, looking at font style and design to help edit and create a newspaper front cover. We re-designed the cover to make it stand out by testing out various fonts.
In history, we continued to look at Crime and Punishment. This week we focused on the Anglo-Saxons. We became members of a jury and decided if an Anglo-Saxon or modern-day punishment would be more suitable for various crimes.
In music, we began to look at body percussion. This week we looked at a piece of music called ‘Pitter Patter’ - a large group of people creating storm-like weather using body percussion. We discussed the structure and texture of the piece of music and re-created it ourselves in small groups.
Week Ending 13th June
English – we began our new text which is a nonsense poem called ‘The Jabberwocky’. We have been given snippets of words and phrases to predict what the poem is about, trying to decode the nonsense words to find the meaning of it📖🔠
Maths – Year 3 and Year 4 are both currently on the topic of time. Converting from analogue to digital, time word problems and fully understanding how many minutes in a day, an hour and a month! Please use this opportunity to reinforce at home test those hedgehogs too😊⏰🕣⌚️
We have also been focussing on our times tables, this week it’s the 6’s and we know a little tip to help us remember them!
Science – we are continuing our topic of sound and volume. We looked this week at how sound travels and how far. We also measured on a decibel meter how loud certain sounds were as part of our investigation. We had a guest in our science lesson this week, Daniel from Hesketh Bank Christian Centre who plays guitar in their church band. Daniel played us some songs and also helped us with our investigation by strumming to see how loud it measured on the meter. We also had Mr Cowan, one of our governors join us who attends the same church and arranged for Daniel to come in, so a huge thankyou to him from Hedgehogs. 🎸
PE – we continued our rugby sessions with the Wigan Warrior coach. We looked at tries this week and throwing correctly, as well as learning the names of the different catches and throws🏉
We had a day focusing on sustainability and looked at ways in which we could help our school be more eco-friendly and we all became eco hero’s. We walked around school identifying areas where we could already see how fantastic we were doing as a school and came up with some ideas to improve our outside area as well as inside. We concentrated on saving electricity, not wasting water, our outside space and how to utilise it more effectively. We also looked at re-using and recycling materials we have around school too. We had a plan to jot down ideas. designed posters and learnt a lot about what it means to be a more sustainable school.

History – we looked at Roman Crime and Punishment. We learnt that they used a court system similar to what we still use today with a judge, jury and lawyer. 🏛️🧑🏻⚖️
Week Ending 16th May
In English we are continuing our story of Weslandia and continuing the build-up to writing our non-chronological report. We have continued to look at word classes, suffixes, and fronted adverbials
In Maths Year 3 have finished their topic of money and are ready to move on to their new topic of Time on Monday and Year 4 have finished their topic of decimals and are ready to move onto their new topic of money.
In Geography we have looked at the Lake District and created a leaflet promoting the Lake District - including human and physical features.
In Music we have created a piece of electronic music.
In Computing we are continuing our topic of AI and how and where it is used in everyday life.
In French we looking at things around the classroom.
In RE we are looking at different places of worship, also looking at different types of churches and comparing them as well as highlighting their features and similarities.
In PSHE we are working on keeping healthy and we have looked at medicines and how and when we use them correctly.
In Art we looked at weaving with paper and created our own using coloured paper. We talked about the different materials that we could use to weave.
Week Ending 23rd May
English, we have been busy writing our non-chronological reports and using our persuasive writing to convince Mr Draper to visit Weslandia.
Maths, Year 3’s have been working hard looking at Roman numerals in relation to clocks and our topic of time. Year 4’s have been continuing with money and recognising how money amounts can be the same using different coins and notes.
Science, we are continuing our topic of sound and we conducted our balloon experiment on Monday to create high pitch and low pitch noises.
Geography, we listed the advantages and disadvantages of tourists visiting the Lake District in summertime.
French, continuing our topic of items in the classroom, in the backpack and in the pencil case.
P.E, continuing our rugby training and taking part in a match during our lesson.
R.E, we looked at the question "When did the church begin?"
PSHE, ending our topic of keeping healthy with an end if unit assessment.
Art, we ended our unit by sewing onto our tie dye T-shirts we created a couple of weeks ago.
We also visited Ribchester Roman Museum on Tuesday. We looked at lots of different artifacts, visited ruins of an ancient Roman bath house and took part in a workshop where we learnt lots of interesting facts and we all had a chance to try on armour and Roman helmets and march with a huge shield and sword!
Week Ending 9th May
In Hedgehogs we have been looking at a new book called ‘Weslandia’, identifying features of the book and making predictions as to what could happen next. We have used adverbial clauses, conjunctions and predictions in our English work, as well as looking at word classes and applying them in our work. Working well as a team in groups of 4 we built shelters using only one bin bag and resources we could find in the classroom for the character Wesley. In Maths Year 4 have continued to work with decimal numbers and Year 3 started a new topic on money. In Computing the children are looking at AI and coding and as part of our RE topic we went on a trip to look at the different places of worship.
