What we have been doing this week

Week Ending 4th July

English - this week we have completed our narrative writing to tell the story of the short Disney Pixar film ‘La Luna’.  Using our completed stories, we have each created a blurb, front cover, and chosen various illustrations to include in our work.  Finally, we have printed out our work and made our own books to support the film.  We have also been playing word games to help broaden our vocabulary and develop our spelling skills.

Transition morning – we enjoyed welcoming our new members of Foxes class on Thursday morning.  They were all superstars!  Continuing our ‘Disney Pixar’ theme from English, we became illustrators, practising our sketching and shading pencil skills to create a drawing of ‘Carl Fredricksen’ from the film ‘Up’.  The drawings were all outstanding!

Maths – Y5 have continued the topic of negative numbers, completing missing number lines and finding the difference between negative and positive numbers.   Y6 have been solving problems involving ratio and proportion.

Art - we enjoyed a trip to Towneley Park in Burnley where we found various sculptures hidden in the woods.  The weather was glorious.

History – we researched Greek Gods and Goddesses and found out that they were believed to influence various aspects of human life and the natural world in Ancient Greek times. We also found out that the most important twelve Gods and Goddesses lived on Mount Olympus.

French – we have been reading and translating French phrases as well as writing about what we did at the weekend.

Computing – we learnt about ‘Databases’ and found out that they are a collection of data that is stored in a computer and can easily be used and added to.

PE – we enjoyed a game of ‘Cowboys and Indians’.  We had to use team work and tactics to move the rugby balls from one area to another.  Each group had to practise attacking and defending skills to win the game.

PSHE – we revised our knowledge of the recovery position and when to use it as well as remembering what the acronyms DR ABC stand for.

Swimming – we have been revising all the different strokes we have learnt this year.

Week Ending 20th June

English

We have completed our report writing this week, compiling each groups reports about the coastal locations of Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and Morecambe.  We finished off our group work by creating a shared write introduction and conclusion. Foxes have made fantastic travel review critics!  We are now going to begin a creative writing topic based upon a short film.

Maths

We have continued to develop our knowledge and understanding of decimals.  This has included converting fractions to decimals and then percentages, comparing and ordering decimals and solving multi-step word problems.

French – we revised being able to discuss ‘what we did at the weekend’ as well as days of the week.

PE - we have continued our rugby sessions with the coach from Wigan Warriors. We have been learning about styles of passing and how to score a try.

Art – we visited the ‘Singing Ringing Tree’ as part of our new topic concerning sculpture and 3D installations.  We researched the artist, the juxtaposition of music and art as well as the four different panopticons,

Cricket tournament – we enjoyed learning new skills in a small competition of ‘Quick cricket’.  We practised bowling, batting and fielding skills as we played four other local schools.

PSHE – we began our new topic about ’First Aid’.  We discussed what first aid is, different abbreviations, eg CPR, ABC and learnt about how to recognise some of the ways in which people can show us that they are feeling unwell.

Swimming – this week we learnt about ‘Drowning Prevention Week’.  We learnt about the acronym ‘HELP’ and gained a little experience of what it might feel like to fall into open water whilst clothed.

Week Ending 13th June

This week in Foxes we enjoyed a trip to Morecambe as part of our English work.  We became travel reviewers, writing about Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and Morecambe.  We described the individual regions, including their attractions, activities, and overall experience.  We then recommended the location we each thought was best.

In French, we revised telling the time as well as practising phrases to ask and explain what we like doing at the weekend, eg 'Je prends mon petit-dejeuner.  Some of the Foxes competed in the TASAlympics at Edge Hill and were absolutely fantastic at the different events.

In PSHE we played 'emotionopology' and discussed different strategies we could use to manage our emotions in different situations.

In history we have started the topic of ‘Groovy Greeks’, locating it on a map and comparing it to England.

In maths we have been adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying and rounding decimals.  We enjoyed sharing a reading lesson with our parents to show them some of the activities that we complete to broaden our vocabulary and understanding of different word classes.

In PE we continued our rugby sessions with the Wigan Warrior coach. We looked at tries this week and throwing correctly, as well as learning the names of the different catches and throw.

Finally, Year 6 enjoyed an impromptu learning experience as they visited Maidenhead Aquatics @ Wigan. We used the opportunity to revise our scientific knowledge about ‘how animals are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and revised how adaptation may lead to evolution.

Week Ending 23rd May

This week has been a busy but enjoyable one for Foxes! Year 6 proudly completed their 'hedgehog house' which they designed and made themselves (with a little help from Mrs Noblett) and carefully chose a carefully considered location for it.  Year 6 also showed great initiative by creating a natural bug habitat nearby, providing a handy feeding spot for any hedgehog visitors. In DT, they finished their fantastic toy designs and took time to evaluate their work, thoughtfully evaluating how they might develop their original ideas if they were to make them again. In French, we practised describing the weather in different seasons and in PSHE we ended our topic by considering what type of world we would like to live in in the future. In geography, we visited a third coastal town to complete our comparison of Blackpool, Southport, and Lytham St Anne’s and learnt about erosion, changes in land use, and the human and physical features of each area, finishing with a well-written report on Blackpool. We visited Arden Lea nurseries to develop scientific knowledge of plants, and the conditions needed for plants to grow according to the seasons, as well as investigating how light travels, discovering that it can only move in straight lines.  Finally, we ended the week with a lovely trip to Southport Beach, enjoying some quality ‘buddy time’ with the Reception children.

Week Ending 16th May

We would all like to say a huge ‘WELL DONE’ to our amazing Year 6 children. We kept the week stress free for the children and they were happy during the week. They have worked extremely hard throughout the year and were impressive during the test,   giving their all and trying their absolute best – we are all proud of them. #TeamBanks

Year 5 were also amazing, working in the hall during the SATs and encouraging their class friends before each test.

Week Ending 9th May

In Foxes this week we have started reading a new book ‘The Last Wild’, meeting the main character Kester and describing his personality. In mathematics, Year 6 have been working hard preparing for their SAT’s whilst Year 5 have been learning about shapes.

During our Science lesson this week we looked at how light travels and classified luminous and non – luminous objects. We also made our own periscopes.

Continuing our topic of Blackpool, in geography we created a questionnaire to find out people’s views and knowledge about Blackpool.

Within our music lesson, we looked at graphic scores and used our bodies to create music based the symbols and images on the screen, with a few children composing to the whole class!

Coaches from Wigan Warriors have been coming into school for PE teaching us all about rugby. This week we have been practicing our evasion skills and looking at how to beat defenders.

Foxes have looked at our British values in PSHE this week and linked them to the VE Day celebrations on Thursday.

In RE, we have been learning about St. Paul and how he promoted Christianity across the world.

Foxes have been continuing their language learning in French, learning about the four seasons.

Foxes have really enjoyed their DT this week as we have begun to practice our sewing so we can sew our stuffed toy designs together from last week’s lesson.

Finally, we have been creating our own blogs on Purple Mash, creating a success criteria and understanding what should be included in a blog.
