Phonics/Spelling

Phonics - Bounce Back Phonics

What is phonics?

Phonics consists of teaching the skills of segmenting and blending, the alphabetic code and an understanding of how this is used in reading and spelling. Simply put, it is hearing the sounds in a word and writing them down to spell it correctly. When reading, it is sounding out a word and sticking the sounds back together to read the whole word.

Bounce Back Phonics

Bounce Back Phonics is a phonics programme taught in years 3 and 4.  The purpose of the programme is to consolidate the children's knowledge and understanding of phonics taught in Early Years and Key Stage 1.  It is based on Letters and Sounds, which is the phonics programme we use in school.

The units of work are useful for children who are experiencing difficulties with:

  • blending phonemes for reading and segmenting for spelling;
  • selecting the correct spelling for long vowel phonemes;
  • reading and spelling longer words containing adjacent consonants.

Spelling Strategies

Different strategies will work for different children and for different words. Try to use a variety of methods to keep your child engaged and to find the best strategy for each group of words or spelling patterns.
