Reading at home

We know that reading is the key to success and at Banks Methodist, we want to foster a lifelong love and appreciation for reading in all children. We know that reading develops children into inquisitive, informed and reflective individuals who can engage effectively with the world around them.  It is evident that their are many benefits to reading regularly which include:

  • acquiring a greater range of vocabulary
  • improving concentration
  • helping children to learn about people, places and events outside of their own experiences
  • developing imagination, empathy and compassion
  • promoting achievement in all subjects, not just English. Children who are good readers tend to achieve better across the curriculum.

In order to guide and capture your child’s curiosity and encourage a love of reading, we have compiled a broad list of recommended texts.  Of course there are numerous books which we could suggest; the list below is a starting point and follows research and recommendations.  There is also a link to the Book Trust's Bookfinder which will help you discover the very best children's books.  Simply choose an age range, pick as many themes as you want to, search through thousands of book reviews, and get reading. Enjoy!
